The Martin Luther Memorial

Lutherdenkmal
The bronze statue of Martin Luther has been in the center of the city market since 1883, where in the Middle Ages the City Court „ Under the Limetree“ convened. The Luther Memorial was designed by Professor Rudolf Siemering and revealed at the 400th anniversary of his death. It shows Luther with the bible in his left hand and the papal bull of excommunication in the right hand. The base is formed out of 4 dark green swedish granit tiles which show scenes out the life of Luther:

- Dispute Luther’s with Dr. Eck (right side)
- Luther as Translater of the New Testament in exile on the Wartburg (left side)
- The victory of good over evil (front side)
- Luther with his family (back side)

The memorial was refurbished 1991/92 by Wolfgang Konrad.
