Ritzgerode

Ritzgerode

Ritzgerode is the smallest village in the Mansfeld - South Harz region, with less than 100 inhabitants. Nestled between meadows, forests and fields its pride is a one of a kind, still functioning water mill. First mentioned in 1046 it has been in the hands of the Ermisch family since 1890, which supplied the sourrounding villages with whole wheat and flour.

The mill is propelled by a water wheel 3,65 meters wide, which was made in 1962. It is fed by a mill pond through a 1,3 meter wide watertrench, in which the water is stored. All machines inside the mill, stemm from 1921 and are in excellent working condition. Until it was put to rest in 1972, the mill produced about 4000 pounds of rye and wheat flour and pellets for animal feed. Since 1980 it is a technical memorial and can be visited with advance notification.
