Die Rammelburg
The Rammelburg sits majestically in the beautiful landscape, between the town of Friesdorf and Wippra on the Southern fringes of the Harz Mountains. The castle was most likely built in the 12th century by the Arnstein nobility and changed hands several times. In the Middle Ages the castle had a reputaion for being invincible. Around 1500 the Rammelburg underwent a complete renovation, accounting for the present lines of architecture. At the beginning of the 18th century it was considered to be the most beautiful castles in Germany. A major fire in 1894 destroyed most of the buildings of the West wing. In 1902 it was built in its new form still seen today. Interresting to notice is, that the chapel occupies the lower half of the prison. At present time the castle is not open to the public but is a photographic pearl.
