The imposing fortification, which is seven times larger than the Wartburg in Thuringia (where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German 1521-1522) , was built more than 1110 years ago. The well preserved bastions, defense walls, towers and buildings fascinate visitors of all ages. At present the castle and grounds, including the nearby point of discovery of the Sky Disc of Nebra are being developed into a large regional archeological park.
Each year in the thrid week of June the castle hosts a a Medieval festival. A restaurant serves from a wide variety on the menu. The grounds and exhibits are open to the public.
