On May 2, 1772 Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg, later known as the poet “Novalis”, was born on this manorial estate in Saxony-Anhalt. After attending the Luther school in Eisleben, he studied in Jena, Leipzig und Wittenberg. He met his contemporaries Schiller, Goethe, Tiek, Schelling and the Schlegel brothers. He was an expert in mining constructionmet and an important philosopher and author of his time.

The castle houses the Novalis Foudation, the International Novalis Society , changing exhibits on a variety of subjects and a permanent exhibit to Novalis himself. The facility is open to the public and can be booked for events, concerts, readings and lectures.

The bi-annual Fairytale Festival on the first weekend in September, is a highlight. „A festival with Novalis and for the children of the world“. The next festival takes place in 2007.
