Helbra is a town at the foot of the Eastern run-offs of the Harz Mountains. It’s name was first metioned in documents in 1155. The origin of the name remains a mystery to this day. For centuries the rich deposits of copper shale ore were mined here and gave the town it’s character. The mining and social structure evolved and continued to be heavily influenced by the August-Bebel Smeltery built in 1880.
Two natural ponds, Bad Neptun and Bad Anna, converted into public swimming areas, make Helbra a favorite recreational destination in the summer.
