The Holey Stone ("Löchrige Stein") near Gerbstedt


The Holey Stone also called „Hoyerstein“, sits in a group of trees Southwest of the town of Gerbstedt. It commemorates the Battle of Welfesholz 11. Feb 1115 on the grounds of Lerchenfeld. Knights of Kaiser Henry V, under the command of the Earl Hoyer of Mansfeld met up with the minions of Duke Lothar of Sachsen in a bloody battle. Prior to begin of the battle, Hoyer is to have put his fist through the stone and is to have proclaimed to his men the victory over the enemy. The fight ended in the total destruction of the imperial armee and with Hoyer being killed by Earl Wiprecht von Groitzsch.
