The Convent was the spiritual center of Germany in the 13th Century. It was the center of German female mysticism under the leadership of the abbess Gertrud von Hackeborn, Mechthild von Hackeborn (convent school), Mechthild von Magdeburg ("The flowing Light of deity") and the holy Gertrud of Helfta.
